Swapping gen 2 GS430/300 subwoofer

Hey guys I replaced the blown levinson sub yesterday,, was a bigger mission than I thought! The cover over the sub unfortunately was not designed to gain access to the sub. Removal is by removing the entire back seats,, bottom first,, then the top piece comes out but don't do what I did and forget that unlike a soarer,, there's two extra bolts ,, found after removing the headrests and lifting the covers behind!! If u wanna make it even easier then unbolt the seat belts and put them out the way on the parcel shelf,, I cba doing that so just did yoga inbetween them! Once the seats are out the way the parcel shelf will unclip at the front,, with the tree things,,, again would be easier if I'd have figured how to get the entire parcel shelf off,, but I had just enough room to bend it a bit and get to the 4 10mm bolts and disconnect the plug.
So with a blown sub u can't we disconnect the rattly thing without getting to this point as can't unplug from the boot,, not good eh!
There was some black rubbery sound proofing stuff over the back bulk head that goes over the underneath of the parcel shelf too,, I just gashed a bit of this with Stan cos not worth the effort to remove.......everybastardthing.....to get it out and back in.
After getting the 4 bolts out,, removed sub and wire,, cut and stripped the original wire,, to re use on what is now in there,,,, my 14 yr old still perfectly working.....Pioneer sub!! So can never sell this car now eh due to sentimental value lol! The 12 inch sub is much bigger than the Mark levinson,, which is prob 10'' , but the pioneer fit..... in a Craig way anyway.... The parcel shelf now is a slight mound,, prob un noticeable unless looking! To get a perfect fit I could have angle grinded the metal,, but again that would be a mission of properly removing..... Everybastardthing.....
The weight of this sub and it's tightness means I'll be very surprised if it even moves a millimetre!!

Check these pics,, I'm happy enough,, sounds awesome! No it doesn't have the kick it did in the truck with my own amp and head unit,, but it sound better than the levinson one did!

Nice work mate, long but always worth it πŸ‘

What is the impedance matching to mate? If they are different then don't go blaring the techno or you'll be replacing a fried sub!!

I see more coming here, countdown to full on amplification soon πŸ˜‚

You do know you don't have to bend the parcel shelf - the side bits pop off and it just slides out.
No but I do now lol

Use a multimeter on the old one, typically they will read 15-20% less than the speaker rating - so 6.8 for an 8ohms speaker. An 8 Ohms speaker is likely to have 6-7 ohms reading tin the multimeter, for example

Way to complicated for me...... I do remember the song though "I'm coming ohm I've done my time" (tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree)

ML run at 16 ohm. The sub maybe lower, but why would they have done that, all depends on what's inside the amp. A 4 ohm sub would melt that amp.

@V8S should have an accurate answer for you mate.

I'll dig out the multimeter guys,, how long would it take to.....fork shit up if it's wrong? I went for a drive yesterday for an hour and everything was ok?

It's not usually immediate mate. Knowing you you'd have a new car by the time that happened anyway πŸ˜‚

I'll have a look for some figures for ya πŸ‘

If it's not driven hard the ML amp will probably be okay. I couldn't find a doc that confirms if the sub is 16 or 8 ohms. I think it might be 8 ohms on the GS but I can't verify it. The ML amp will probably cope until Craig turns it right up and tweaks the bass gain........might survive until tomorrow then. 🀣 If it's not happy the amp should protect itself and clip the signal.

The best thing to do would be to install it properly with a line out converter with a decent separate amp that's matched to the sub or an amp that can accept the input from the speaker wires to drive the sub at a decent level with a 4 ohm load.

There are tutorials on clublexus showing exactly how to replace the the sub correctly without distorting the rear parcel shelf. There's also some old stuff on installing an after market sub. As Tim says it's really not that difficult and worth doing properly for the best result.πŸ™‚

Where is the factory amp btw,, this is a levinson system,, and also the only blown oe sub I've ever come across lol,, took car to my mates last night,, was all good again,, it definitely is. Not as loud as when it was in the truck connected to the infinity amp,, I've had a levinson system once before,, in that sc430 I had, but can't remember how loud it was in that,, but better still,, it sounds nice enough,, as long as it don't blow

Cheers mate,, ok so that's a licence to.....not be careful to blow mine lol
Given that everybody else has advised you to enjoy it but be careful and we know that won't happen. Rich has just put it out there before you ask the question next week πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

My odds are still favouring this motor being sold 1st 🀣
