Project poverty spec.. the story so far

Smokeygsi

Pov Spec FTW!
Hi guys! thought i would share my project thread for my daily drive.. i have pretty much cut and paste from club lexus so excuse all the $$ and American referances!

Shes a 1993 Toyota Soarer - JDM import obviously
1JZ-GTE hooked up to an auto box thats destined for the bin in favour of an R154
I picked her up for £1000 GBP so about $1500
Paintworks a Porsche dark olive pearl, but its a little tired in places due to years of neglect by the previous owner
It came with HSD mono Pro coilovers with pillow ball top mounts
Tired 18" wheels - 8.5" and 9.5" ET-38 If i recall - so a touch on the weak side
And a Greddy profec e-01 boost controller
I wont go into the rear lights.........

Some pics from the day i picked it up:

IMG_1187_zpse6b0492d.jpg

IMG_1186_zps5062ce70.jpg

IMG_1188_zps069669f8.jpg

I quickly realised the lights were terrible, so set about polishing the headlamps and fitted some 4300K HID's - huge improvement - especially in the middle of winter!
Being a cheap car, there were obviously going to be some issues that needed attending to, which soon got expensive!
Boot struts failed, service was needed, the rear brake discs / rotors were warped to a rediculous degree, sticking front caliper, tyres were all shot and it pulled to the left on the road.
So i ordered a heap of stuff over a few months and set about putting stuff right

Fitted some new boot struts - nice 10 min job which has resulted in the back of my head feeling much better these days :woohoo:

IMG_1433_zps4e65ad07.jpg

Serviced while I had some spare time one Saturday

IMG_1562_zpsca2bd24f.jpg

New rear brakes - just went with cheap stuff for now, as i want to fit Supra 2 pots to the rear

IMG_1564_zps5f84b271.jpg

IMG_1565_zps9f0edf95.jpg

Also threw these on - i have to say the difference in the feel of the steering was impressive for such a simple mod

IMG_1560_zpsb8aaff24.jpg

Decided a clean was in order

IMG_1440_zpsf0cb5fa4.jpg

IMG_1437_zps9a4a844b.jpg

Next up was 4 tyres - a Pair of 255/35/18 Dunlop SP sport maxx on the rear, and a pair of 225/40/18 Yokohama Prada spec 2 on the front - would love the Yokohamas on the rear, but for some reason they arent available in the size i need.. wierd one that
Not wanting to waste the money i spent on the tyres i carried out a full alignment - As we never had the Soarer or SC over here i had no specs to work with, so i ended up using the UK spec Toyota Supra Spec and increased the camber on the front a touch - ended up i think with 2 degrees neg on the rear and 1 degree 50 mins on the front

Love the tread pattern on these

IMG_1606_zps4079a552.jpg

Hooked up for the alignment - the RS6 in the background was being treated to new turbos.... I need to re align it at some point as i have played with the ride height so its bound to have changed.. maybe

IMG_1613_zps07011f24.jpg

IMG_1612_zps61ee1ae6.jpg

Lastly I attended to the front brakes - by the time i had done all the above, the seized caliper had really taken its toll on the brakes - i was getting seriously bad vibrations under braking and knocking when taking off after stopping. With the rarity of LS400 brakes over here i ended up opting for brand new Supra 4 pots, coupled with EBC grooved and drilled discs, EBC yellow stuff pads and HEL brake lines..
Being the general idiot i am, i decided to tackle this at home.... while it was snowing a little.... i got a little bit cold....
It was all a pretty simple afair to be honest, worst of it was undoing the hard brake line to flexi union which had at some point been overtightened crushing the union

Old Vs New caliper..

IMG_1650_zps4ab65932.jpg

The reason one of the pistons seized - lasted 20 years, so thats pretty good going

IMG_1651_zps4612be55.jpg

Some rather knackered flexis also

IMG_1652_zps7956e918.jpg

Anyways, ripped all the old stuff off and set about attacking the backing plate with an angle grinder..

IMG_1646_zps826bc38e.jpg

IMG_1647_zps3f94fe5c.jpg

Bolted on the new calipers with the discs and pads, bolted up the braided flexis and bled the brakes with my vac gun.. (cunning plan that! )

IMG_1656_zpsa6990945.jpg

And all done.. gotta say, the difference in braking power is outstanding. I am a happy bunny 🙂

IMG_1657_zps4c831cc1.jpg

Also Trial fitted the Super Advans on the front, need spacers for sure, so thats going to be another £200 / $300 for the front and rear... yey..

IMG_1669_zps02040c1b.jpg

So thats were she stands for the time being,
I have some bits which i have been getting ready to go on, including:
Bixenon headlamps
Front mounted intercooler
HKS mushroom filter
Super Advans

im on the look out for some decent rear lights, and i am looking into exhausts, but it already had the CAT removed, so i may end up needing to remove the fuel cut as im almost certain it will boost past the limit and cut the fuel with a larger diameter exhaust

So i have been on the case of getting the lighting sorted for the soarer..

Managed to obtain some near enough perfect 97+ rear lights... so it will be goooood bye to the ebay items! (YEY)

IMG_1838_zps1098bd66.jpg

And i have been busy starting a headlamp build - Overall effect will be BiXenon and removed sidelight (think you guys may call it the 'city light')
I will probably relocate the light to live with the turnsignal.
The projector i am using is a Hella H55 (i belive) its out of an Audi S3 headlamp anyway. Not ideal for the small soarer headlamp, but i think i have made it work

Modified projector with modified soarer adjustment mech and wiring for solenoid sorted

IMG_1685_zps2c984b1e.jpg

Trial fitted in lamp before i did the wiring

IMG_1625_zpsc18a724d.jpg

IMG_1622_zps6be02068.jpg

With the lense - its a little off, but will be fine once its adjusted properly

IMG_1624_zpsa790ef99.jpg

Slotted back together but still LOTs to do.. plus i need another projector for the other side..

IMG_1626_zps12113feb.jpg

And on...

IMG_1840_zps645077e4.jpg

Plans over the winter.. i really want the advans at least on the front.. i am thinking of using grid drifts on the rear in 10j the 9j advans look daft with 255 tyres. I really want to finish the bi xenons too :ugeek:

Cheers for looking

Re: Smokeys Soarer.. the story so far (loooong)

Thanks for the kind words guys 🙂

I still have the advans, they are sat in my garage waiting for me to get my ass in gear, roll the arches and buy some spacers. I wont be putting them on the rear as i want a minimum 9.5j there - the wider the better to be honest!

I wasnt too sure on the rear lights at first.. but they have definately grown on me. i may end up taking them apart to play with them, but i have heard the one with lock hole can be a pig..

As for the brake bleeder.. its actually a mityvac so can be used to test vacuum and pressure related stuff as well as sucking fluids.. obscenely useful!

Realised the front strut brace is missing out of the thread... was among the bargains on driftworks and out smart repairer at work kindly painted it for me to match the HSD's

terrible pic..

Re: Smokeys Soarer.. the story so far (loooong)

So, its been a while since i updated this.. done a few bits recently..

First off was a common Soarer issue. The wiring loom for the front end lighting runs in a plastic conduit underneath the drivers side chassis leg. Low Soarers tend to rub into and through the wiring. I thought mine wasnt low enough to do this... apparently i was wrong.. the give away being the dipped beam flickering on and off with the lights switched off! lol

The damage

IMG_2078_zps96c50181.jpg

So i tore that all apart, cut the loom, extended it to run above the chassis leg

IMG_2080_zps1709a8d5.jpg

Rewrapped and secured above the chassis leg, out of harms way 🙂

IMG_2082_zps30785e19.jpg

Following on from that i replaced the blown LED sidelight bulbs with some normal bulbs from an A8 - purely as they give a slightly whiter light than a standard bulb. The took a machine polisher to them (spot the boo boo :( )

Before

IMG_2079_zps2c8ca479.jpg

After

IMG_2091_zps7bf86cb4.jpg

I have also obtained a second bixenon projector, so i can slowly get to modifying and fitting the lights

Left - Standard A3 Bixenon Center - Standard Soarer halogen projector Right - Hybid bixenon to fit into Soarer lamp :D

IMG_2160_zpsd2e3cbb0.jpg

Lastly, and probably most importantly i have finally fitted my Super Advans! But only the fronts for now.. im not happy with the tyres for the rear and i dont want to got for a thinner tyre (would be 255 on a 9j and would need a 235 probably)

So, rocking my 225/40/18 Pradas on the 9J advans with 25mm hubcentric spacers - fit looks good, just had to bin the arch liners and bend the tabs so they dont scrub

Spacers

IMG_2192_zpsd9c943a9.jpg

And onto the car with the wheels

IMG_2195_zps0c4c5e22.jpg

IMG_2197_zps8accf478.jpg

Next up, most likely in the spring is an exhaust and sorting out something for the rear wheels

Really like those fronts mate.

I'm on 265 on 10j rears and it's a snug fit. I'm going to a 255 or 245 next.... My fronts are 8.5j and will be 215's I think when I replace the 225. So it will still be a staggered setup.

Thanks 🙂 im a very happy lad.. i have wanted super advans on a car for so so so long. Finally got my ass in gear!

I want to stick with the 255's but want to go with a 10J wheel.. i am thinking along the lines of Rota GTR-D because the honest.. i am never going to find advans in 10j.. maybe 9.5, but again they dont come up for sale too often

Aye. Don't like mixed styles personally but I guess that's your choice.

I'd imagine 9.5 or 9 spaced would be fine

Advans sa3r's is what I am after for my motor.
But they only seem to come up in weak sizes or silly money.

Yeh, its not too often they come up in 18"

I think i was very lucky with these - all four 18x9 et-42 but the best of it is complete with all 4 center coins, all 4 wheel nut covers with nuts AND the funky tool to remove the nuts.. all for £320 :ugeek:

Fit the rears then! 9 is ok, once it has a wider tyre on you'll hardly notice no??

Try tyre stretch website to see what tyres look like on 9's to get the right profile to give it a staggered look...
